Romania Volunteer - Typical Programme
We have been working in Romania for over 20 years and just over 10 years ago we helped to set up our Romanian sister charity "Fundatia William Tyrrell". Volunteers in Romania normally stay for a minimum of 5 working days (Monday - Friday). We can "personalise" trips to suit individual or group needs but here is a typical example of the programme a volunteer will follow.
Sunday - Fly into Bucharest airport, Romania where you will be collected by our driver and brought by road to Slatina (journey time about 3 hours).
Monday - Meet the Romanian staff team and undergo relevant medical checks (some volunteers, depending on their placements need medical clearence prior to entering some of the Romanian government run facilities). Spend time in our centre planning the rest of the week.
Tuesday / Wednesday/ Thursday -
Option 1:
Start time 8.30am, go our summer school for disadvantaged Roma children (summer months only) and remain their working with local volunteers and our children until about 2pm. 2-4pm break. 4-6pm Visit Family type Homes (small children's homes run by the local Social Services department, each looking after 5-9 children (many with special needs).
Option 2:
Join a small team to work with children living in small family type homes visiting both in the morning nd again in the late afternoon with some afternoons joining a larger team and travelling 50 minutes outside of Slatina to work in one of 2 adult institutions. These are very challenging places and can be emotioanally and physically demanding on volunteers.
Option 3:
Join our Romanian volunteer team and take some of our children away for a week, camping.
Option 4:
(For volunteers visiting outside of the summer)
This programme is more varied with a mix of sessions spent visiting the family type homes and time spent in our classroom delivering activity sessions for groups of young Roma children.
With all options Friday is generally left as a "flexi" day. And the weekend is left for the volunteers to decide for themselves. Many volunteers go off exploring some of the fantastic sites in Romania, others choose to organise activities with our children and some just chill or go shopping.
All options are only a guide as programme details are often subject to change at short notice. People wishing to volunteer need to have a flexible and adaptable appraoch. We will always do our very best to accommodate your volunteering needs and to meet any personalised specifications but sometimes things can be outside of our control.
