Health & Well Being
There are no special vaccines or medications to take prior to volunteering in Romania but volunteers need to be aware that in the summer months (Jun - Sept) it can be extremely hot, dry and dusty. Mosquitoes are out in large numbers and their bites can be painful.
In the winter (Oct - March) it can be really cold in Romania and so you will need to wrap up well.
Romania is part of the EU and so immediate emergency medical treatment will be delivered without any problem but if a hospital stay is required you will be billed unless you have an up to date European Health Insurance Card. You will also need Travel Insurance. Wishing Well will not be held responsible for volunteers travelling to Romania without a EHIC and travel insurance policy.
Volunteers are recommended to make sure that they are up to date with regards to their Tetanus and Hepatitus B vaccines.
It is strongly recommended to bring light tops to cover your arms and light trousers to cover your legs in the summer evenings. wearing mosquito repellant and using a room sanitisor is also strongly recommended. mosquito bites can hurt especially if you receive multiple bites, and sometimes they can swell up. Anti-histamine cream can be bought locally that will help the swelling and soothe the pain but you may wish to bring some with you.
A small first aid kit containing a range of small dressings, anti-diarrhoea medication, re-hydration powders and anti-inflamatory pain killers will be helpful.
There are many stray dogs and cats in Romania and rabies is known to be prevelant in the country, but this is rare. Stray dogs/cats are generally friendly but we advise all volunteers not to go near any stray or garden pet.
Working with the children, especially those with special needs and living in the care homes can be stressful and emotionally challenging. We have a lot of experience in supporting volunteers but we can not do this effectively if we do not know how you are feeling or if something in the day has affected you and you are in need of support unless you tell us. Keep us informed about how you are feeling and let us know as soon as possible if there is anything that is affecting you in a negative way.
