    Information about Slatina

Slatina is the principle town for the Olt County. The town has a population of approximately 80,000 people.  3,000 of which are classified as Roma and they live in three seperate areas in the outskirts of the town.  Many of the Roma live in extremely poor conditions and they are one of the target groups that we work with.  However, in central Slatina the town is much like any other european city, with a wide range of shops, bars, eating places and support facilities (Dr's Dentists, pharmacies, etc).

The town has several 24 hour pharmacies and it is also home to a large municipal hospital.  The hospital is a little outdated with it's equipment but it does have a functioning accident & emergency unit, theatre and ITU as well as all the other facilities you would expect in a hospital.

The weather can be very hot in the summer and extremely cold in the winter.
Crime is relatively low level in the town but should an incident occur there is a police station in the centre of the town.  Most things are within walking distance of our centre and the volunteer flat, including a large local market, supermarket and the post office.

Slatina is on one of the main road transport routes through Romania and it is easy to get in and out of by car or by train.

The town is made up of 2 main parts, the "old" town and the centre.  The centre is modern and functionable but the real gem to the town is to be found down in the old town area.  This place is rather run down at present but will soon be going through a re-generation process.  Here are some sample pictures taken of the old town.
